Anonymous has recently accused Twitter of shutting down their accounts when they spoke out against ISIS.
Twitter made headlines in the past for being sympathetic towards ISIS and other terrorist groups on its platform. Since then, the micro blogging company made several changes in its policies and even came up with different automated tools to detect such content on the platform and take the actions against them. It even informed of deleting thousands of accounts from its website that were supporting and promoting terrorism on the platform, however it looks like accusations have not stopped.
The social media network is being accused by the Anonymous for shutting down their accounts as they harassed the ISIS jihadis. Anonymous is a group of hackers and web engineers who have been shutting down many ISIS accounts each month, however they informed that the claims Twitter made of shutting down thousands of terrorist and supporting accounts is actually false.
Anonymous has harassed ISIS groups for a while and for good reason, once an ISIS group made accounts and started spreading extremist beliefs, the web engineers would make efforts to bring them down. Hackers even reported the accounts and asked other to do so at Twitter Inc.’s platform so that such accounts were shut down but they claimed that the company did not do anything about it. This is not the first time the social media giant is being criticized.
The social media advertising company tried to defend itself by making a blog post that said it had managed to shut down 125,000 accounts that were promoting the ISIS propaganda, however Anonymous said that never happened. One of the hacker even said that if accounts on the platform were not reported, the company would be overflown with accounts of such kind.
According to these hackers, it is not the ISIS accounts that Twitter shut down, but Anonymous accounts that were actually taking the actions against these extremist groups. Anonymous even said that if the company is actually motivated and wants to take actions against the ISIS, it should make a button that says ‘terrorist’ so that users can report such accounts easily. A spokesman for the company said that Twitter has teams around the globe which are always working and investigating for any violation on the platform and it even works with law officials when required.
After Anonymous reported about the shutdown of their accounts instead of ISIS on Twitter, the company reinstated the accounts in just a few hours as it was overflown with different requests to unblock the accounts.
