Alphabet has decided to bid farewell to Boston Dynamics- its robotics arm.
The company acquired Boston Dynamics almost three years back for around $500 million, when Alphabet rose to power, the company unanimously decided that the profits of this segment were not satisfactory and they did not even intend to come up with a marketable product in the future, thus chose to bid farewell to the segment.
Bloomberg revealed the news and cited two sources close to the matter regarding its future prospects. Amazon Inc. and automotive behemoth Toyota Motors are interested in the acquisition of Boston Dynamics as it has seen constant changes in leadership along with various disruptive issues since its inception.
Another issue that Boston Dynamics encountered is that the executives were not comfortable to work with the Google’s robot engineers. This is the primary reason why Boston Dynamics was on the verge of becoming a part of Google X, however, this did not really happen.
The videos posted by the Boston Dynamics on YouTube showed four legged and two legged robots, which were able to maintain balance in crucial scenarios. The robots were successful in doing so even whilst performing humanoid task such as keeping things on a shelf, and in case they fell, they had the ability to get back and retain their balance. It is speculated that because of the popularity, the PR team at Google decided to stay in this field to avoid negative publicity. The tech giant has been accused at various instances to follow the patterns of a SkyNet like establishment known for enslaving humanity.
The negative publicity related to the company’s robotics arm is quite loud to be ignored. In reference to the emails by Bloomberg, Courtney Hohne, the spokesperson at Google X highlighted the minimal discussion threads related to the impact of technologies on human jobs. Thus, she demanded Google X to deviate its paths from the Boston Dynamics robot videos.
Boston Dynamics has been initially successful in securing funding from the U.S. Marine Corps. and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The humanoid robots were initially designed to cater to military needs such as transportation of cargo on a rough terrain.
The department has not been completely removed where sources close to the company suggest that Amazon wishes to take over. The company makes robots to serve at its fulfillment centers and also used drones for delivery purposes. Likewise, Toyota is also interested in the entity.
At this point, it is difficult to predict what purpose these robots will serve in the future. It is quite evident in the videos that the segment has the ability to expand its operations. It is rather strange for the search engine giant to bid farewell to this segment since the time Alphabet took over, it was devoted to add value to the company’s operational segments. However, the recent advancements pose that Alphabet has adopted a different strategy where the company’s goals are rather short term and are more money oriented.
