Wal-Mart will have Santa Claus, christmas carols and decorations at its stores during the holiday season.Shoppers along with retailers are all geared up to embrace the holiday season. Ironically, no other retailer is so keen about capitalizing on the holiday season as much as Wal-Mart. The shopping giant has not been doing quite well and by adding a festive feel to their stores they actually wish to redeem their positive image in the industry.
The company has decided to “doll-up” its dead and boring stories this holiday season. The company has aims to decorate the stores with a holiday feel to it along with Christmas carols playing in the background on the speakers. But the things that will make heads turn are the Santa Claus. The company has plans to deploy 3000 Santa Claus at its retail outlets so that the guests can snap pictures, enjoy the festivities and shop at the same time.
The reason why the company is investing so heftily in having Santa Claus on board at its stores is that Amazon Inc. has a staunch online market. The trend of online shopping has substantially increased where shoppers prefer to buy things conveniently at home. Both AMZN and WMT have their online stores but the sales at Wal-Mart’s E-commerce store are negligible whereas at Amazon’s E-commerce sales are mind boggling.
So the company is trying to push its E-commerce sales but that is a long term prospect. So to churn sales in the short term and capitalize on the holiday season, the company has decided to enrich its in store experience. Whoever enters the Wal-Mart stores will feel the joy and colors of the festive season since there will be Santa Claus, food tasting and Christmas carols making it a sort of recreation for the buyers.
According to a study, children influence the shopping decisions their parents make. Therefore, if children are brought to the stores then they will be more engaged to shop at such a place which is filled with spirit of joy.
At this point of time, Wal-Mart really needs to change its course and do something for survival. The company is on a bad stage where revenues have staggered and profitability is not really happening for them.
According to USA Today, “Wal-Mart hasn't been a growth story in years. You have to go all the way back to fiscal 2008 to find the last time that sales grew by more than 6%, and it hasn't been able to break north of 2% top-line growth in three years. Meandering sales growth would be fine if margins were expanding, but net margins are actually contracting.” The company sales are merely flats and it is high time for them to actually do something for their revival.
